Begonia ‘Pink Urchin’ is an exceptionally unusual collector Begonia known for its dark, textured foliage covered in vivid pink, hair-like trichomes. These soft pink projections rise from the leaf surface like the spines of a sea urchin, giving the plant its distinctive “Pink Urchin” name.
Commonly listed as a hybrid of Begonia baik × Begonia ocellata, this cultivar is prized less for traditional variegation and more for its extraordinary texture, saturated pink trichomes, and compact growth habit. Against the deep green foliage, the pink surface hairs create dramatic contrast that becomes especially striking as the plant develops.
This is a specialty Begonia best suited to collectors who can provide consistently high humidity and stable growing conditions.

WHY COLLECTORS LOVE IT
Pink Urchin offers something very different from a conventional pink-variegated Begonia. Instead of pink sectors or marbling within the leaf tissue, the colour comes from dense pink trichomes growing across the leaf surface.
The combination of dark foliage and bright pink surface texture gives each leaf an almost otherworldly appearance. Under good lighting, the trichomes become especially visible and create depth and texture that photographs cannot always fully capture.
Its compact size also makes Pink Urchin particularly appealing for collectors building specialized Begonia displays, terrariums, propagation cabinets, or high-humidity grow spaces.
PINK TRICHOMES & GROWTH
The pink “spikes” on Begonia Pink Urchin are trichomes — fine hair-like structures growing from the leaf surface. They are part of the plant’s natural foliage rather than traditional variegation.
The appearance and intensity of the pink coloration may vary between leaves and at different stages of growth. New foliage may also change in colour and texture as it matures.
Because the leaves are highly textured and covered in fine hairs, avoid unnecessary handling and allow the foliage to remain dry with gentle air circulation.
CARE
Light: Provide bright to medium indirect light. Avoid strong direct sunlight, which can damage the delicate foliage and increase moisture loss.
Water: Keep the growing medium lightly and consistently moist, but never waterlogged. Avoid allowing the plant to dry completely for extended periods.
Humidity: High humidity is strongly recommended. Pink Urchin performs best in a terrarium, enclosed plant cabinet, propagation box, or similarly controlled environment. Aim for consistently elevated humidity rather than frequent large fluctuations.
Temperature: Keep warm and stable, ideally around 20–28°C. Protect from cold drafts and abrupt temperature changes.
Substrate: Use a light, airy, moisture-retentive but well-draining Begonia mix. Fine bark, coco-based material, perlite or pumice, and sphagnum may be used depending on your growing system.
Airflow: Gentle airflow is important in high-humidity environments. Avoid allowing condensation or water to sit on the densely textured leaves for prolonged periods.
Fertilizer: Feed lightly during active growth with a diluted balanced fertilizer.
BEST FOR CONTROLLED GROWING ENVIRONMENTS
Begonia Pink Urchin is not the best choice for a dry, open-room environment. Collectors will generally have better long-term results when it is grown in a terrarium, enclosed cabinet, or other warm and humid environment where conditions remain stable.
If you already grow sensitive Begonias successfully in high humidity, Pink Urchin makes a distinctive addition with a foliage texture unlike most conventional houseplants.
