Alocasia Regal Shield Albo combines the dramatic size and structure of Regal Shields with unpredictable white-to-ivory variegation.

Its broad leaves develop deep-green to near-black upper surfaces with slightly ruffled margins. Rich burgundy-purple undersides add another layer of contrast, particularly when the leaves are viewed from below or illuminated from behind.

The albo variegation may appear as cream marbling, white splashes, speckling, or larger sectors. These pale areas create strong contrast against the dark foliage and emphasize the plant’s prominent veins and shield-shaped form.

Unlike compact jewel Alocasia, Regal Shield Albo develops into a substantial floor plant. It is best suited to collectors looking for a large, architectural plant rather than a shelf-sized variety.

ALBO VARIEGATION & GROWTH

The white-to-ivory variegation is chimeric and naturally unpredictable. Some leaves may develop bold white sectors, while others display cream marbling, splashes, or predominantly green growth.

Young plants often show subtler marbled variegation. The pattern may become bolder or more sectoral as the plant matures and begins producing larger leaves.

Future variegation cannot be guaranteed. The amount and placement of white or cream colouring may increase, decrease, or change with every new leaf.

Highly variegated tissue contains less chlorophyll and may be more susceptible to cosmetic browning than greener areas.

Under favourable conditions, Regal Shield Albo grows relatively quickly for a variegated Alocasia. Growth may temporarily slow after shipping, repotting, or during cooler winter conditions.

REGAL SHIELD ALBO VS. STANDARD REGAL SHIELDS

Standard Regal Shields develops broad, dark-green to near-black foliage with burgundy-purple undersides but does not display additional white variegation.

Regal Shield Albo retains the same large growth habit, shield-shaped foliage, and contrasting undersides while adding white-to-ivory sectors, splashes, and marbling.

Both forms can become substantial indoor floor plants, but the albo form requires additional protection from strong sunlight because its pale tissue is more sensitive to scorching.

CARE

Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Strong filtered light supports vigorous growth and clear albo contrast. A south- or west-facing window with a sheer curtain may work well. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the white areas. A grow light can be helpful during darker Canadian winters.

Water: Allow the top 4–5 cm of substrate to begin drying before watering thoroughly. Let excess water drain completely and never allow the roots to sit in standing water. Reduce watering when growth slows during fall and winter.

Humidity: Approximately 60–80% humidity with good airflow is preferred, with at least 50% whenever possible. A humidifier can be helpful during dry Canadian winters. Avoid regularly misting the foliage.

Temperature: Keep warm and stable, ideally around 18–29°C. Protect the plant from cold drafts, air-conditioning vents, cold windows, and prolonged temperatures below 15°C.

Substrate: Use a chunky, airy, fast-draining aroid mix containing materials such as orchid bark, coco coir, perlite or pumice, and a small amount of compost or other moisture-retentive material.

Fertilizer: Feed lightly approximately once every four weeks during active spring and summer growth. Reduce or pause feeding during periods of slow growth and avoid fertilizing for the first three to four weeks after arrival.

Acclimation: After arrival, provide stable warmth, bright indirect light, and consistent humidity. Avoid unnecessary repotting or major environmental changes while the plant adjusts.

Toxicity: Like other Alocasia, this plant contains calcium oxalate crystals and should be kept away from pets and children if ingestion is possible.
