Alocasia Dragon Scale Albo Variegated | Rare Alocasia for Sale in Canada

The Alocasia Dragon Scale Albo (Alocasia baginda ‘Dragon Scale’ Albo Variegated) is a highly collectible rare variegated Alocasia known for its thick, deeply textured foliage and striking white-to-cream variegation. Each broad, shield-shaped leaf features raised ridges, recessed channels, deep green colouring, and bold dark veins, creating the armoured appearance that gives Dragon Scale its name.

Unlike variegation on smooth-leaved plants, the white and cream colouring of Alocasia Dragon Scale Albo Variegated develops across a three-dimensional leaf surface. The pale sectors, marbling, and speckling highlight the plant’s bullate texture, making the contrast between the green and variegated areas especially dramatic.

Because the albo variegation is chimeric, every leaf develops differently. Some leaves may display large white sectors, while others show cream marbling, fine speckling, or more subtle variegation. No two plants are exactly alike.

New leaves often emerge softer, lighter, and less textured. Over the following one to three weeks, the leaf hardens, the green colouring deepens, and the dragon-scale ridges and albo contrast become more defined. This is completely normal.

At Vancouver Rare Plants, every Alocasia Dragon Scale Albo is individually photographed and carefully acclimated before shipping. The plant shown is the exact plant you will receive.

Dragon Scale Albo vs Silver Dragon Albo

Dragon Scale and Silver Dragon are both cultivars of Alocasia baginda, but their base colours are noticeably different.

Dragon Scale Albo has a rich, deep green leaf surface with dark, high-contrast venation. Its white and cream variegation appears bold and dramatic against the darker foliage.

Silver Dragon Albo has a lighter, silvery-grey metallic base. Its pale variegation appears softer and more blended.

Choose Dragon Scale Albo for a darker, bolder appearance and stronger contrast between the green and white sections.

Alocasia Dragon Scale Albo Care Guide

Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Strong filtered light supports healthy growth and attractive variegation. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the white sections first. A grow light is helpful during darker Canadian winters.

Water: Allow the top few centimetres of the growing medium to dry before watering thoroughly. Let excess water drain completely. Avoid keeping the roots constantly wet, and reduce watering during fall and winter.

Humidity: Aim for 65–80% humidity, with at least 60% whenever possible. The pale variegated areas may develop dry or brown edges before the green tissue when humidity is too low. A humidifier or grow cabinet is strongly recommended during dry Canadian winters.

Do not mist the leaves. Water can remain inside the textured ridges and increase the risk of fungal spotting.

Soil: Use a loose, fast-draining aroid mix containing orchid bark, coco fibre, pumice, or perlite. Choose a pot only slightly larger than the root ball to reduce the risk of excess moisture.

Temperature: Maintain temperatures between 18–27°C. Protect the plant from cold drafts, sudden temperature changes, and prolonged exposure below 15°C.

Fertilizer: Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength approximately once every four weeks during active spring and summer growth. Pause feeding during winter and for the first three to four weeks after arrival.

Toxicity: Like all Alocasia, Dragon Scale Albo contains calcium oxalate crystals and is toxic if ingested by cats, dogs, children, or adults.

Growth and Variegation

Alocasia Dragon Scale Albo is a compact, relatively slow-growing plant that produces leaves one at a time. Its thick texture, raised ridges, and dragon-scale shape are stable characteristics, but the albo variegation is unpredictable.

Future leaves may show more, less, or differently patterned white and cream colouring. Reversion is possible, although uncommon in well-variegated specimens. The appearance of future growth cannot be guaranteed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Dragon Scale Albo variegation stable?
No. The variegation is chimeric and naturally changes from leaf to leaf.

Why does a new leaf look pale or flat?
New leaves emerge soft and gradually develop deeper colour, stronger texture, and clearer variegation as they harden.

Can Alocasia Dragon Scale Albo be propagated?
Yes. It can be propagated through corms, offsets, or rhizome division, but the amount of variegation in new growth cannot be guaranteed.

Is Dragon Scale Albo the same as Silver Dragon Albo?
No. Dragon Scale Albo has a darker green base and stronger contrast, while Silver Dragon Albo has a lighter, silvery-grey appearance.
