Alocasia Sarian Albo Variegated is a rare, fast-growing collector Alocasia prized for two distinctive features: zebra-striped petioles and white-to-cream albo variegation across large, deeply serrated dark-green leaves.

Alocasia ‘Sarian’ is commonly described as a Philippine hybrid of Alocasia zebrina × Alocasia micholitziana. It combines the striped petioles and vigorous growth associated with A. zebrina with the elongated foliage, pronounced venation, and serrated margins associated with A. micholitziana.

The albo form adds white and cream sectors, splashes, and marbling to the foliage. The zebra-patterned petioles are a stable characteristic of Sarian, while the albo variegation is naturally variable from leaf to leaf.

WHY COLLECTORS LOVE IT

Sarian Albo offers two forms of visual interest on the same plant. The petioles naturally display dark zebra-like striping, while the leaves can develop contrasting white and cream albo variegation.

Its elongated arrow-shaped leaves feature glossy dark-green surfaces, strong venation, and deeply serrated margins. White sectors and marbling create additional contrast without hiding the distinctive structure of the foliage.

Unlike compact jewel Alocasia, Sarian develops into a substantial floor plant. Under good conditions, it can reach approximately 3–5 feet indoors and is among the more vigorous variegated Alocasia commonly grown by collectors.

ALBO VARIEGATION & GROWTH

The white-to-cream variegation is chimeric and naturally unpredictable. Some leaves may develop large white sectors, while others show cream marbling, splashes, or predominantly green growth.

The amount and placement of variegation can change with every new leaf. Future variegation cannot be guaranteed.

The zebra-striped petioles are separate from the albo mutation and remain a characteristic feature of Sarian regardless of how much white appears on an individual leaf.

Highly variegated white tissue contains less chlorophyll and may be more susceptible to cosmetic browning than green areas.

CARE

Light: Bright, indirect light. Strong filtered light supports vigorous growth and clear albo contrast. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch white areas. Grow lights can be helpful during darker Canadian winters.

Water: Keep more consistently moist than many compact Alocasia, while still allowing the top 2–4 cm of substrate to begin drying between waterings. Drain thoroughly and never leave the roots waterlogged.

Humidity: Approximately 60–80% humidity is preferred, with good airflow. Because Sarian develops large leaves, adequate humidity becomes increasingly important as the plant grows.

Temperature: Keep around 18–28°C. Protect from cold drafts and prolonged temperatures below 15°C.

Substrate: Use an airy, well-draining aroid mix containing materials such as orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir.

Fertilizer: Feed lightly every 3–4 weeks during active spring and summer growth. Reduce or pause feeding when growth slows.

Toxicity: Like other Alocasia, this plant contains calcium oxalate crystals and should be kept away from pets and children if ingestion is possible.
