Most variegated Alocasia are small. The Regal Shield Albo is not. This is a large-format, architectural statement plant — broad, shield-shaped leaves in near-black to deep forest green, striped and sectored with clean white-to-ivory albo variegation, held on tall upright petioles above deep burgundy-purple undersides. It commands a room. It earns its name.
Each leaf is entirely unique. We photograph every specimen before shipping — what you see is what you receive.

ABOUT THIS PLANT
Alocasia 'Regal Shield' is one of the most architecturally impressive Alocasia hybrids in cultivation — a deliberate cross between Alocasia odora (the towering, fragrant elephant ear of Southeast Asia) and Alocasia reginula 'Black Velvet' (the velvety jewel Alocasia of Borneo). The result is a hybrid that inherits the scale of odora and the dramatic, near-black leaf surface of reginula — a plant that reads as sculpture from across a room.
The Albo form layers something extraordinary onto this already striking plant: clean white-to-ivory variegation in sectors, stripes, and marbled patches against the deep green-black foliage. The burgundy-purple undersides provide a third layer of contrast that becomes visible whenever leaves catch angled light or breeze. No two leaves — and no two plants — are ever identical.
One important thing collectors should know: variegation expression in young plants can be subtle. Young Regal Shield Albo often shows lighter, marbled variegation that becomes bolder, more sectoral, and more defined as the plant matures and leaves grow larger. This is not a flaw — it is characteristic of this cultivar. The plant rewards patience.
CARE REQUIREMENTS
| ☀️ Light | Bright indirect light. This is the single biggest factor in how well variegation expresses. Regal Shield Albo needs more light than many aroids — a position near your brightest window (south or west-facing) with a sheer curtain is ideal. Grow lights work well in darker Canadian homes or winter months. Avoid direct sun, which scorches both green and white tissue. |
| 💧 Watering | Water when the top 4–5 cm (2 in) of soil is dry. Water thoroughly and allow to drain completely — never let roots sit in standing water. This plant is larger than most Alocasia and retains more moisture in its root mass, so resist the urge to water on a fixed schedule. Adjust frequency by season: more in spring/summer, less in fall/winter. |
| 💦 Humidity | 60–80% preferred; 50% minimum. White and ivory variegated sections are more moisture-sensitive than green tissue. Brown leaf edges on variegated sections are almost always a humidity issue first. A humidifier is highly recommended, particularly during dry Canadian winters. Avoid misting directly onto leaves — it promotes fungal issues. |
| 🌡️ Temperature | 18–29°C (65–85°F). Regal Shield is more cold-sensitive than it looks. Keep away from drafts, air conditioning vents, and cold exterior windows in winter. Below 15°C (60°F) can trigger dormancy and rapid leaf drop. |
| 🪴 Soil | Well-draining, chunky aroid mix — orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir or peat. A good ratio is approximately 40% bark, 30% coco coir, 20% perlite, 10% compost. The large root mass of a mature Regal Shield needs excellent aeration to prevent root rot. Slightly root-bound is fine; oversizing the pot risks waterlogged soil. |
| 🌱 Fertiliser | Balanced liquid fertiliser every 4 weeks during spring and summer. This is a larger, faster-growing plant than compact Alocasia and benefits from consistent feeding during the growing season. Reduce or stop in fall and winter. Do not fertilise during acclimation. |
| 💧 Water quality | Use filtered or room-temperature water where possible. Fluoride and chlorine in tap water can cause brown leaf tips, particularly on the variegated sections. |
| 🐾 Toxicity | Toxic to cats, dogs, and children if ingested (contains calcium oxalates). Keep out of reach of pets and young children. |
GROWTH BEHAVIOUR & WHAT TO EXPECT
Regal Shield is a moderate-to-fast grower compared to most Alocasia — in the right conditions (bright light, warmth, high humidity), it can add several large leaves per season. Mature specimens grow impressive individual leaves up to 40–60 cm long on established plants. This is a floor plant, not a shelf plant. Plan for it to eventually need significant space.
Variegation evolves as the plant grows. Young plants and recently established specimens often produce leaves with subtler, marbled albo variegation. As the plant matures and leaves become larger, the variegation typically becomes bolder, with more defined white sectors. This is characteristic and expected — do not mistake early, lighter variegation for poor stock. The best leaves are ahead.
Like all Alocasia, Regal Shield may slow or drop older leaves during winter — this is a seasonal response to lower light and temperature, not a sign of failure. Maintain stable warmth and humidity and avoid the temptation to overwater during this period. New growth will return with spring conditions.
Regal Shield also benefits from occasional leaf cleaning. The broad surface of each leaf collects dust, which reduces photosynthetic efficiency and dulls the deep, satiny finish. Wipe gently with a damp cloth — avoid misting directly, which can encourage fungal spots.

COLLECTOR NOTES
The Regal Shield Albo is in a different category from most variegated Alocasia collectors encounter. It is not a compact jewel plant for a shelf or cabinet — it is a large-format, room-defining specimen that commands space and attention. The combination of near-black foliage, bold white sectoral variegation, and deep burgundy undersides creates a layered, high-contrast effect that intensifies as the plant matures and leaves grow larger.
For collectors building a serious indoor tropical display, a mature Regal Shield Albo functions as an anchor — the plant that everything else orbits. For collectors newer to large Alocasia, it is worth knowing that this hybrid is considerably more vigorous and adaptable than many variegated aroids. It is more forgiving of imperfect conditions than, say, a jewel Alocasia, while still demanding the humidity and light that variegated tissue requires.
The breeder provenance also matters here: Regal Shield was developed by LariAnn Garner of Aroidia Research — one of the most respected names in aroid hybridisation. This is a plant with a documented lineage, not a tissue culture novelty. The Albo variegated form is a later selection from this already distinguished cultivar.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is Alocasia Regal Shield Albo variegation stable?
No — the albo variegation in Regal Shield is chimeric and unstable. Each new leaf will carry white-to-ivory variegation, but the amount, pattern, and distribution shifts with every flush. Some leaves may show bold half-and-half sectors; others show marbling or streaks. Reversion to fully green is possible but uncommon in well-selected specimens. This natural variation is part of what makes each plant genuinely unique.
Why does my Regal Shield Albo have lighter variegation on young leaves?
This is completely normal and characteristic of this cultivar. Young Regal Shield Albo plants and recently establishing specimens often produce leaves with subtler, lighter marbled variegation. As the plant matures and leaves grow larger, the albo variegation typically becomes more pronounced, bolder, and more sectoral. The best variegation on this plant comes with time and good care.
Where can I buy Alocasia Regal Shield Albo in Canada?
Regal Shield Albo is extremely rare in Canadian retail. The standard Regal Shield appears occasionally in nurseries, but the variegated Albo form is almost exclusively available through specialist rare plant importers. We are one of the few boutique rare plant stores in Canada stocking this variety. Availability is very limited.
How big does Alocasia Regal Shield Albo get?
This is a large plant by Alocasia standards. Indoors with good care, it typically grows 60–120 cm tall with a similar spread. Individual leaves on established specimens can reach 40–60 cm long. This is a floor plant — plan for significant space at maturity. It is not suitable for a shelf or small display.
What humidity does Alocasia Regal Shield Albo need?
Aim for 60–80% relative humidity. The albo and ivory variegated sections are more vulnerable to drying out than green tissue. Below 50% — which is common in Canadian homes in winter — browning on white sections becomes likely. A humidifier placed nearby makes the most significant difference. Avoid direct misting on the leaves, which can promote fungal spots.
Is Alocasia Regal Shield the same as Alocasia x reginora?
Yes — Alocasia x reginora is the hybrid name sometimes used for Alocasia odora × Alocasia reginula. 'Regal Shield' is the cultivar name given to this hybrid by breeder LariAnn Garner of Aroidia Research. The Albo form refers to the white-variegated selection of this cultivar.
How is Regal Shield Albo different from standard Regal Shield?
Standard Regal Shield has uniformly deep green to near-black leaves with no variegation. Regal Shield Albo carries white-to-ivory albo variegation in sectors and marbled patches across those same deep green leaves. The burgundy-purple undersides are present in both forms. The Albo form is significantly rarer, more sought after by collectors, and considerably more difficult to source — especially in Canada.
Is Alocasia Regal Shield Albo beginner friendly?
We consider it intermediate to advanced. Its care requirements — consistent 60%+ humidity, careful watering discipline, bright indirect light, and a stable warm environment — are well within reach for experienced houseplant collectors. However, its size, sensitivity to location change, and the needs of its variegated tissue make it less forgiving than a standard Regal Shield. A grow light and humidifier setup will make a meaningful difference in Canadian conditions.
Is Alocasia Regal Shield Albo toxic to pets?
Yes — like all Alocasia, Regal Shield Albo contains insoluble calcium oxalates and is toxic to cats, dogs, and children if ingested. It can cause oral irritation, drooling, and gastrointestinal distress. Keep it out of reach of pets and young children.
