BOTANICAL DETAILS
| Botanical name | Alocasia sanderiana 'Nobilis' — pink chimeric variegated form |

| Variegation | Chimeric — unstable; blush to dusty rose pink marbling, splashes, and sectors; each leaf unique |
| Leaves | Deeply lobed, undulating margins (kris sword shape); near-black to metallic green; bold silver-white venation; purple-red undersides |
| Mature indoor size | 30–60 cm (12–24 in); compact; leaves 20–35 cm long |
| Skill level | Advanced — experienced collectors with humidity-controlled setup only |
CARE REQUIREMENTS
| ☀️ Light | Bright indirect light within 1 m of a filtered window or under a grow light. No direct sun — pink sections scorch easily. |
| 💧 Watering | Water when top 2–3 cm is dry. Drain completely. More sensitive to overwatering than most Alocasia — err drier in winter. |
| 💦 Humidity | 65–80% preferred; 60% minimum — no exceptions. Canadian winter ambient humidity drops to 20–35%. Dedicated humidifier and grow cabinet are not optional for this variety. |
| 🌡️ Temperature | 20–28°C (68–82°F). No cold drafts. Below 16°C triggers rapid stress and dormancy. |
| 🪴 Soil | Extremely well-draining aroid mix — orchid bark, perlite, small amount of coco coir. No heavy potting mix. |
| 🌱 Fertiliser | Quarter to half strength balanced liquid feed every 3–4 weeks in spring/summer only. None in winter or first 4–6 weeks after arrival. |
| 💧 Water quality | Filtered water or rainwater only — sensitive to fluoride and chlorine, especially on silver-veined margins and pink sections. |

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is the variegation stable?
No — chimeric and unstable. Each leaf is different. New leaves emerge lighter and develop full blush-to-dusty-rose colour as they mature. Reversion possible but uncommon in well-selected stock.
Is buying cultivated Alocasia sanderiana ethical?
Yes — all cultivated stock is propagated from established horticultural specimens, not wild-collected. Wild collection is illegal in the Philippines. Purchasing cultivated plants supports conservation in cultivation.
How is pink variegation different on Nobilis vs lighter-leaved Alocasia?
The near-black base makes the blush-to-rose pink read as deeper and more jewel-like rather than pastel. The silver-white primary venation adds a third colour element unique in the genus.
Is it toxic?
Yes — contains calcium oxalates. Toxic to cats, dogs, and children if ingested.
