Alocasia Black Velvet Golden Variegated, also known as Alocasia Black Velvet Aurea, is a rare variegated form of Alocasia reginula ‘Black Velvet’. It combines the cultivar’s signature velvety, near-black foliage and silver-white veins with striking yellow, lime, cream, and golden variegation.

The warm aurea colouring may appear as sectors, marbling, splashes, or fine speckles across the dark leaf surface. Because the variegation is naturally variable, every leaf develops differently and each plant has its own pattern.

Standard Alocasia Black Velvet is prized for its thick, suede-like foliage, dramatic dark colour, and contrasting silver veins. The golden variegated form adds bright aurea tones that stand out strongly against the near-black leaf surface.

Depending on the specimen and leaf maturity, the variegation may appear lime green, lemon yellow, creamy gold, warm golden yellow, marbled, speckled, or sectoral.

Its naturally compact growth also makes it well suited to shelves, desktops, grow cabinets, and smaller indoor rare plant collections.

GOLDEN VARIEGATION & GROWTH

Alocasia Black Velvet Golden Variegated typically produces new leaves one at a time.

New foliage may emerge lighter and softer before gradually developing deeper dark colouring, stronger velvet texture, more visible silver venation, and clearer golden contrast as the leaf hardens.

The amount and placement of aurea variegation can change with every new leaf. Some leaves may develop large golden sectors, while others show fine marbling, speckles, or more green tissue.

Future variegation cannot be guaranteed. Light, maturity, temperature, nutrition, and overall growing conditions may influence how new foliage develops.

Highly variegated golden or cream sections contain less chlorophyll and may be more susceptible to cosmetic browning than greener tissue.

CARE

Light: Bright, indirect light. Strong filtered light supports healthy growth and attractive aurea colouring. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch lighter variegated areas.

Water: Allow the top 2–3 cm of the growing medium to begin drying before watering thoroughly. Let excess water drain completely and avoid keeping the roots constantly wet.

Humidity: Approximately 60–80% humidity with good airflow is ideal. A humidifier or grow cabinet can be especially helpful during dry Canadian winters.

Leaf care: Avoid regularly misting the velvety foliage, as moisture can remain on the textured leaf surface.

Temperature: Keep warm and stable, ideally around 18–27°C. Protect from cold drafts and prolonged temperatures below 15°C.

Substrate: Use a chunky, airy, fast-draining aroid mix containing materials such as orchid bark, perlite or pumice, coco coir, and a small amount of quality potting medium.

Fertilizer: Feed lightly during active spring and summer growth. Reduce or pause feeding when growth slows.

Toxicity: Like other Alocasia, this plant contains calcium oxalate crystals and should be kept away from pets and children if ingestion is possible.
