Compact jewel Alocasia, Brunei (described 2016, Cuprea Group). Iridescent metallic foliage shifting between green, bronze, copper, and purple. Vivid magenta-to-pink primary venation. BOTANICAL DETAILS
| Botanical name | Alocasia azlanii — pink chimeric variegated form |
| Origin | Endemic to Brunei, Tutong District; Cuprea Group; formally described 2016 |
| Variegation | Chimeric — unstable; soft pink sectors and marbling; each leaf unique; pink only (no white albo sectors) |
| Base leaf | Thick, glossy peltate; deep green to purplish-black; iridescent metallic sheen; vivid magenta-to-pink venation; reddish-maroon undersides. New leaves emerge softer — metallic depth and pink deepen at maturity. |
| Mature size | 10–28 cm tall; leaves 10–20 cm; compact shelf and cabinet plant |
| Skill level | Advanced — requires humidity-controlled setup |
CARE REQUIREMENTS
| ☀️ Light | Bright indirect light — the iridescent shift is most dramatic under quality indirect light. No direct sun. Grow lights strongly recommended for Canadian winters. |
| 💧 Watering | Water when top 2 cm of substrate is dry. Evenly moist, never soggy. Reduce in winter. Root stress shows on pink sections first. |
| 💦 Humidity | 70–85% preferred; 65% minimum. Higher than most Alocasia. Metallic sheen dulls and pink sections brown in low humidity. Canadian winter drops to 20–35% — grow cabinet or humidifier essential. |
| 🌡️ Temperature | 18–26°C (65–78°F). No cold drafts. Sensitive below 15°C. |
| 🪴 Soil | Light, well-aerated aroid mix — orchid bark, perlite, small amount of coco coir. Roots need air circulation. |
| 🌱 Fertiliser | Quarter to half strength every 4 weeks spring/summer only. None in winter or first 4 weeks after arrival. |
| 💧 Water quality | Filtered or overnight water only. Tap minerals cause spotting visible on metallic surface and pink sections. |
| 🐾 Toxicity | Toxic to cats, dogs, children (calcium oxalates). Keep out of reach. |

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Pink Variegated vs Albo Pink?
Pink Variegated (this plant): pink sectors only. Albo Pink: white and pink combined — three elements. Distinct forms; Albo Pink is generally rarer and more demanding.
Is the variegation stable?
Chimeric and unstable — each leaf unique. Magenta venation and metallic sheen are stable; added pink sectors are not. Reversion uncommon in well-selected stock.
Why does the metallic colour shift?
Structural colour — leaf surface cells refract light by angle, like butterfly wings. Not pigment. Most dramatic on mature leaves. New leaves appear softer before fully hardening.
Can I propagate it?
Yes — corm division. Pink in offsets not guaranteed to match parent. Slow species; patience required. All cultivated stock — no wild collection.
